In 2013, Australian scientists plan to begin human trials of the prototype bioelectronic eyes. The new device being developed by Bionic Vision Australia. The technology is designed to help patients suffering from a hereditary eye disease, to see the surrounding large objects such as buildings and cars. Under the bionic eye implanted chip is assumed that stimulates the retina, using 98 separate electrodes.
The kit includes a built-in sunglasses camera that captures images and sends them through wires to an external processing device. The data are taken implant that stimulates the retina before the signal is sent to the brain.
Currently, Bionic Vision Australia is working not only on the above prototype, but also on the so-called "unit increase in visual acuity," which allows visually impaired people to recognize faces and even read text in large print. It is expected that testing will start in 2014.
